HomeWhy Stainless Steel?
The Material Argument

India's Climate
Demands a Better
Material

Termites. Monsoon humidity. Decade-long use cycles. Wood furniture was not designed for Indian conditions. Stainless steel was. Here is the complete case — material by material, property by property.

Annual termite damage in India
Wood is the primary victim

Wood returns near zero

Reason 1

Complete Termite Immunity

Termites feed on cellulose — the structural component of all wood, MDF and plywood. They cannot feed on steel. There is no treatment, no varnish, no chemical barrier to maintain. Steel is simply not food for termites, and never will be.

No cellulose = nothing for termites to eat
No annual pest control treatments required
Particularly critical for base cabinets with floor contact
Zero risk regardless of monsoon humidity levels
02
Reason 2

Monsoon-Proof Stability

Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture with the ambient air. In India's monsoon season, humidity regularly exceeds 80% in most regions. The result: swollen doors, warped shutters, jammed drawers and fungal growth inside cabinets. Steel has none of these properties. It is dimensionally stable at any humidity level.

Non-porous — does not absorb moisture
Doors and drawers operate identically in January and July
No fungal or mould growth inside cabinets
Particularly important near sinks, dishwashers and bathrooms
03
Reason 3

Hospital-Grade Hygiene

Wood grain traps food particles, bacteria and odours. Over time, even regularly cleaned wooden kitchen surfaces harbour bacterial colonies invisible to the eye. SS 304's non-porous surface prevents bacterial adhesion entirely — which is why it is the global standard for hospitals, surgical instruments, commercial kitchens and food processing facilities.

Non-porous — bacteria cannot penetrate the surface
Same grade used in hospital surgical instruments
FSSAI standard for commercial food preparation
Wipes clean in seconds — no special products needed

Reason 4

Built to Last Decades

The average Indian family uses their kitchen for 15–20 years before a full renovation. A wood kitchen is typically replaced at year 10–12, often earlier in humid regions. SS 304 has no inherent degradation mechanism — the chromium oxide passive layer that prevents corrosion is self-repairing and permanent. The material does not age the way organic materials do.

30–50 year structural lifespan
Self-repairing chromium oxide passive layer
No warping, cracking, delaminating or fading
Backed by Ferro's lifetime structural warranty
05
Reason 5

Retained Resale Value

Steel is a globally traded commodity with inherent material value. A stainless steel kitchen at year 10 still has significant residual value — both as refurbishable furniture and as raw material. Wood furniture at year 10 has effectively zero resale value. This is why Ferro Designs can offer India's only buy-back guarantee on steel interiors.

60–70% residual value at year 5
100% recyclable — no landfill at end of life
Ferro buy-back programme available whenever you upgrade
Wood: near-zero resale, landfill disposal
Not All Steel Is Equal

Choosing the Right Grade

Entry Level
MS Powder-Coated

Mild steel with decorative coating. Strong and cost-effective — but the coating can chip, exposing the base metal to rust. Suitable for dry areas only.

Good structural strength
Wide colour range
Not rust-proof if coating damaged
Not recommended near water
Not eligible for buy-back guarantee
